So we'll be in Italy for New Year's. There are so many events in Italy during New Years, but I think we'll be in Sorrento on New Year's Day. (We'll probably be in-flight during NY Eve.) If I were in Italy, I think the Orvieto Jazz Festival would be pretty cool to visit, versus the chaos in Naples. Imagine, in Orvieto, lots of muscians, free music, and it's close to Rome!
Anyway, we're in the process of researching hotels for our homebase towns: Sorrento (1/1-1/6), Perugia (1/6-1/11), Siena (1/11-1/16), and Milan (1/16-1/18). Having a homebase makes it easier to daytrip, pack less, and enjoy your surroundings.
I'm making a list of sights I'd like to visit while there.
While we are staying in Sorrento, we will visit:
Naples: Museo Archeologico, Cappella Sansevero, Spaccanapoli, Capodimonte, Duomo, Castel dell'Ovo (view from outside)
Pompeii
Herculaneum (perhaps, if time permits)
Vesuvius
Capri
Amalfi Coast: Positano, Paestum, or Ravello
Umbria - our homebase is Perugia - we (or I, as my sis may have other towns) hope to visit:
-Perugia
-Orvieto
-Assisi
-Spello
-Ascoli-Piceno (Le Marche)
-Arezzo and Cortona (Tuscany)
*Major transportation within Umbria (Perugia) will be mostly relied on train or bus:
Regional Bus Lines:
APM Perugia - Only within Umbria rides. www.apmperugia.it
Sulga - This line has long-distance rides (e.g., Pompei - Assisi or Ravenna - Roma) www.sulga.it
Tuscany - our homebase is Siena - we hope to visit:
-Siena
-In Chianti (different towns in Chianti, most likely any town we can get to via bus from Siena; I believe our choices are Radda in Chianti and Castellina in Chianti)
-Lucca or Pisa (may be our longest day trip)
-Volterra
-Montelpulciano or Montalcino
*Tuscany Info:
Sena Bus Line (This bus line has a route Siena - Milano!!! 25 euros one way. Also provides interregional travel, including routes such as Perugia-Siena.) www.sena.it
Milan:
-Duomo: the last time I was there, it was closed for reconstruction/refab. I'd also like to go up to the top.
-La Scala: the most famous opera house in the world!
-Brera Art Gallery: this area is pretty cool, so the art gallery should be nifty.
-View the Caravaggio exhibit at Palazzo Reale
-Shopping in Milan: an art unto itself!
*Milan Info:
Milan Malpensa Shuttle Info: www.airpullman.com/shuttle/shuttlee.htm
None of the itinerary is set in stone. I know it's probably more than we can handle!
