Alternative Lodging in Italy - Religious Institutes

I have not personally contacted any of these institutions recently to verify if they still accept lodgers. I would assume so. From my dealings while planning my own vacations, it would prove wise that you contact in advance as some of these institutions book early (sometimes even 1 year ahead). If you don't hear back from them, don't take offense (they have a limited budget and access to technology). Bear in mind increases in price, too.

In Abruzzo:
Convento di Sant'Angelo d'Ocre - 67020 Fossa, accepts singles and couples for brief retreats.
Santuario del Volto Santo - 65024 Manoppello (tel. 39-85-859118) has 75 guest rooms with private bath and telephone, as well as a very reasonably priced restaurant.
Convento dell'Osservanza - 65028 Tocco da Casauria (tel. 39-85-880132) offers 160 beds in its adjacent Casa Santa Maria del Paradiso.

In Lazio:
Fraterna Domus - Via Mont Brianzo, 62. Rome 00186 (tel. 06/688.02727, fax 06/683.2691) Near the Tiber River, this convent is located many cultural sights (Vatican, Pantheon, Spanish Steps). Singles and doubles all with bath. Breakfast included (half and full board available upon request). CC not accepted. Curfew: 11 p.m. Open: All year. Train station: Termini. Take bus #70.

Istituto Santa Giulianna Falconieri - Via Calasanzio, 1. Roma 00186 (tel. 06/688.03344, fax 06/687.1471, email: s.giuliana@tin.it) Near Pantheon, Campo dei Fiori and Piazza Navona. Most private baths located adjacent to rooms (singles, doubles, and triples). Breakfast included. CC not accepted. Curfew: 11:00 p.m. Open: All year (except August). Train station: Termini. Take bus #64 to S. Andrea della Valle.

Prices include a continental breakfast. Train station: Cavour, line B. Exit station and walk. Several blocks southwest of Termini.

San Giuseppe della Montagna - Viale Vaticano, 88. Rome 00165 (tel. 06/397.23807, fax 06/397.39095) Near Vatican. All rooms have bath and breakfast is included. CC not accepted. Curfew: flexible. Open: All year. Train station: Termini. Take Metro A to Ottaviano/S. Pietro, walk toward Vatican.

In Veneto:
Istituto San Giuseppe - Ponte della Guerra, Castello, 5402, Venice 30122 (tel. 041/522.5352, fax 041/522.4891) Good location. All have bath, but no meals. CC not accepted. Curfew: 11 p.m. Open: All year. Train station: Santa Lucia. Take water bus #1 or #52 to Piazza San Marco. Cross the Piazza, walk 2 blocks on Mercerie and turn right; go about 4 blocks to Ponte Guerre (a bridge), cross it and turn left immediately.
